Let me just observe that his objects are situated somewhere on the border of painting and sculpture, Oil, acrylic, pigment, concrete, stone, branches, ceramic, photography – these are the materials of his works. It does not matter whether they come as classic easel painting done on a canvas stretched upon a loom, a miniature, a full-size sculpture lavishly coated with paint, a relief, or, finally, a case out of which you can draw seven tiny pictures – one for each day of the week. I don’t find it in any way disturbing that his objects may sometimes too closely resemble a souvenir of a journey to somewhere it is not quite clear where. Ronald Ruseler is a tramp by nature, He has been to nearly all the countries of the Old Continent, he has visited the USA, Turkey, Egypt, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. What he saw and experienced expresses itself in this particular form – not any other. This is how he wants it and this is how he must express it. I am impressed by this inner compulsion externalized so directly – only slightly courting the tradition of art, extremely emotional, at times erudite in an almost sophisticated manner. And, with all that, tender and sensitive – to time, place, nature, culture, archetype, horizon, myth and superstition…

First of all, however, Ronald Ruseler prominently expresses his ties with nature, the earth. This acquires an abstract and sensual dimension. In his travels, he looks for inspiration, nourishment, for roots and reference points. He identifies and distances himself. In trying to describe the place where he is – he defines himself. He wants to be identified with the Aztecs, the Mayas, with Judas, Buddha, Christ, the pharaohs. He wants to know more because he wants to express time, the passing of it, nostalgia and oblivion, the simultaneous sense of past and future. In the magic of ancient signs, rituals and objects he discovers meanings which are very modern and personal… It may even occasionally seem that he is merely a medium through whom perennial human fears, longings and ideas are conveyed. In this sense his work can be read as one reads a calendar, a map, totems of war and peace, emblems of the old God carved on the skin of rocky mountain, an augury, a coin dating back to the times which even a glacier can’t remember, a dream which no one knows the beginning of or when it might end…

This is the art of both moderation and exuberance, reserve and gesture, humility and egocentrism. It may in a sense evoke the tradition of the old Dutch painting – open and sensitive to object: its meanings and the climates it carries…

Translated by Małgorzata Wardenska

Mariusz Rosiak

RONALD RUSELER

Nie zamierzam szukać precyzyjnych definicji gatunkowych tego, co tworzy Ronald Ruseler.
